My First Day of Work

My internship started today and it went really well. I was so nervous to ride the subway by myself, I left almost an hour early for work. Yep, that happened. Actually I saw a friend from church on the subway ride so that calmed me down a bit. I finally breathed some when I made it to the office. It is surrounded by fur shops, which is kind of interesting.

The office colorful, bright, and open. I'll have more pictures later. I met Celerie Kemble and most of the other designers that work in the office. It's very similar to the environment at school, first off, because it's is all ladies. Secondly it is similar because everyone feels like family. I'm excited to get to know everyone and find my place in the office.

I met one of the other interns (there are about four or five total) and was able to run some errands with her. She's really friendly and while we were running around, we walked through this garden that is above the streets (I can't remember its official name) and saw a great building by Frank Gehry! Although I am completely exhausted, it was a nice first day.

Breakfast at Tiffany's

Last night, my roommates and I decided to do a little reenactment of the opening scene of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" so this morning before church we took a quick trip down to the iconic store.
It totally looks like it right? :)

Tiffany's was closed (since it was Sunday) and did not have that peaceful, early morning vibe like in the movie. Actually there was an Israeli festival going on which was pretty interesting. All of the streets were blockaded so it was super hard to get around. Basically I was just running after Emily and Jen, following them like a lost puppy.

We made it to church (which is in the same building that the Manhattan Temple is in) right next to Lincoln Center. The people I've met so far in the ward are really friendly and nice.

I just can't get over the set up of the place. It's the temple and the chapel in the same building! But separated by different floors. Going to church today was wonderful. In a place that's so overwhelming and different than anything I've ever experienced, it is so comforting to know that going to church is the same. The same format with the same doctrine and the same spirit. That's something I love about being a Latter-day Saint.

After church we got together with some friends from the ward to make dinner all together. Remember the picture of our teeny tiny kitchen? Emily and I cooked chicken alfredo in that. Something was on each of the four tiny burners, inside the tiny oven, and covering the two feet of counter space. Everyone was happy so they must have liked it!

All of us went to this fireside about loving your neighbor, a discussion about the LDS and Jewish religions. A rabbi and a public relations rep for the church spoke and then had a Q and A afterward. It was very insightful. After the fireside, we went to an apartment of some friends in the ward for dessert. I made oreo truffle balls that turned out really well (but I just remembered that I forgot the plate at their house).

The idea of starting work tomorrow is finally sinking in and freaking me out a bit. But I talked through how to get there on the subway at least five times with my roommate (and probably three times with my other roommate) so I feel pretty good about it. I've picked out my outfit too and just need to pack my purse. Wish me luck!

First Day in the City

After sleeping in, my roommates and I headed to Brooklyn to a Lebanese festival.

Ashlee, Emily, and I got delicious Lebanese food. Here's my falafel sandwich. So good!

At the festival, we met up with some friends and went down to the water to see the skyline.

For dinner we met up with my aunt and uncle at the St. Regis. Their place was gorgeous and I especially loved the bathrooms.

We strolled down 5th Avenue to Tao, a restaurant with great food and a great atmosphere. I don't know what my uncle ordered for us, but everything was delicious. We had Buddha chocolates for dessert. I wish I would have taken a picture.

On our walk home, we went through Central Park and found a place that has free dance lessons Saturday night. We have plans for next weekend! We walked all the way home from 55th Street and passed Cafe Lalo, as seen in You've Got Mail. :)

Here's a link to a gorgeous view of New York City.

NYC, I have arrived

So long Boise, hello New York City! My mom and my sister dropped me off at the airport Friday morning for a full day of flying. My lunch consisted of peanuts, pretzels, cranberry juice, and oreos, while my dinner was a cheeseburger from McDonalds.

After almost 10 hours or so of traveling, I reached LaGuardia with my giant suitcases that I could barely manage. I landed around 10pm and finally got to my apartment, safe and sound, around 12. Cabs are CRAZY here! It was an exciting ride.

Here is the closet-sized kitchen in our apartment. It looks tiny in the picture and is tiny in real life. We'll see how much cooking I'll be doing...

This is my bed. The top one. That giant thing on the ground is the AC unit for our room. Although it wasn't too bad sleeping last night, I know it's going to be a long, hot summer.

This is the living room and it has a wall covered in blackboard paint so we can doodle. It's fairly spacious for four girls. There are these little lofts on either side for storage.

I have three roommates who are really great girls, two of which also have interior design internships. Today we're going to buy my Metro pass, check out a Lebanese festival, and have dinner with my aunt and uncle. I can't wait to tell you all about it!

Dream Pop

Remember this post? Oh wait, it's basically right before this one (if you scroll down a bit) because I hardly ever blog anymore. Feast or famine.

Anyway, I just purchased Wake the Earth, the EP for the Honey Trees and love it. Although Moon River is still my favorite, their other songs are good too. Becky Filip and Jacob Wick make up the band. To quote them: "We try to make magic in music form." They label their music as "dream pop." Perfect description.

Aren't their pictures great?

Random Thoughts

Disclaimer: Since I have been sporadic in the timing of my posts, I will also be sporadic in the contents of my posts.

Thought #1: Internship

The majority of my thoughts now revolve around around my internship in New York City which I leave for in a week! While it's basically glorified slave labor for school credit, it's with a really great company: Kemble Interiors. And it's in New York. Did I mention that?

Thought #2: Packing for said internship

I'll be there for three months and everything I need must fit into two suitcases, one carry-on, and one personal item. Therefore, a packing list is a necessity and it must be a very detailed one. Right now, the only thing I have listed is all of the shoes I need to bring. I can hear my Dad say, "You'll need a whole suitcase just for your shoes!" Thanks Dad.

All I know is that I want to look as classy as Kate Winslet as I stroll through the streets of the city.Thought #3: Getting everything I need to pack

Speaking of shoes, I've been dreaming of the Bensimon ones above for walking around (in a summer dress of course). But I need tennis shoes more because I've actually been using mine to work out and they're pretty tired. Since I don't have a bottomless budget, I need to weed out the "necessities" from the "I really want and think I need but when I think a little more I don't actually need but still really really want." Do you know the feeling?

Thought #4: The Subway

I need to figure this out to get to work.

Thought #5: The Beatles

Surprise surprise, I'm thinking about the Beatles. I officially have all (minus one or two) of their albums and have been listening to them almost constantly. A few weeks ago at a little reunion with my friends, we watched A Hard Day's Night and Help! I thought I loved them before, but somehow that love has grown.

Thought #6: Blog

Since I'll be in a new and exciting place, I feel it's something I should blog about. Although I'm horrible about being consistent with posting, I'm going to try. The goal is to take lots of pictures and have fun adventures to tell.

Thought #7: Everything else (which is about as random as this awesome pictures)

Do I have enough money to live for this summer and for the next year at school?
Buy music with my iTunes gift cards...but what? The Honey Trees for sure!
What will I do when I graduate in April?
Plan a trip somewhere foreign (but most likely lack the funds to do so)
Eat lunch and see a movie by myself (something I've never done)
Bike ride to the farmer's market Saturday morning
Pinterest...I'm obsessed

And a bunch of other things that no one else really needs to know (or cares to). Thanks for reading!

Moon River

Gorgeous song.
